Thumbprint Cookies

 1/2 c shortening (or butter)		
 1/4 c brown sugar
 1 egg, separated			
 1/2 t vanilla
 1 c sifted flour		
 1/4 t salt
 3/4 c finely chopped nuts

Mix shortening, sugar, egg yolk and vanilla thoroughly.

Blend flour and salt, stir in.

Roll dough into 1 tsp balls.

Beat egg white slightly wit fork.

Dip balls in egg white and roll in nuts.

Place about one inch apart on ungreased baking sheet.

Press thumb gently in middle.

Bake 10-12 minutes at 350.

Fill thumbprint with jelly or frosting.
